Support for things like quizzes, HTML5 widgets, and popovers just don’t exist currently on the Pages side.īut will iBooks Author be around forever, the Logic to Pages’s GarageBand? I’m thinking no. ibooks files will still work in the iBooks app, and you can make them to your heart’s content.Īnd that’s important, because Pages’s ebook creation - while much better than before - is still in its rudimentary stages. IBooks Author isn’t going anywhere (yet). That definitely makes me feel better things. But ebook creation is still currently split between Pages (simple but few features) and iBA (Mac-only). So if you’re working on iBA projects, continue away! And if you want to build quick books on iPad, you can do that too. Update: Serenity Caldwell asked Apple about this very issue: Pages just isn’t up to the task quite yet. iBooks Author, while buggy at times, can create amazing, interactive work. Is Apple going to slowly roll these features into Pages? Does iBooks Author have a future for those who need more power than iWork can offer? I think Apple should clarify their roadmap here. The app also includes a publishing tool that makes it easy to prep a file for the iBooks Store all Pages can do is create an ePub file to the Finder. The app can send a preview to an iPad for on-device proofing, which I find incredibly helpful. Lastly, iBooks Author has much more robust tools when it comes to publishing. This is a pretty big oversight, as these tools can add real interactivity to a book. These can be used to add Keynote files, pop overs, review questions, videos and even HTML content to books. Pages also lacks iBooks Author’s widgets. iBooks Author includes tools for a Table of Contents and Glossary, and these are missing from Pages as well. There are fewer templates available, and the hierarchy of chapters and sections are nowhere to be found. The options when creating a book in Pages are currently more limited than what is available in iBooks Author. I’m not super surprised by that, but as the future of iBooks Author is unknown, I’d like a way to know I can edit this file using Pages in the future. It cannot open my iBooks Author file for my book on the iMac G3 and history of Mac OS X. The Pages update is out now, and I took the new Mac version for a spin. Just a matter of time. One of today’s announcements is that Pages can now be used for ebook creation, both on the Mac and on iOS. Macs popping up in every in business everywhere. MS is on the way out, they are just a cloud hosting company now and Windows/Office is an afterthought. How much RAM would I need to make every change to my formatting appear live? 10 terabytes? Because my mac mini does it with 8gb butter smooth. I am not sure what the software designers do at MS all day, but it's certainly not trying to make it simpler to use or look less cluttered. The entire MS Office suite is a disorganized set of menus, many of them many levels deep and also duplicated in other menus. Pages you just click up or down and it adjusts the line spacing live so you can see it. Then it shows you under the menu a tiny example of what it will look like on a fuzzy image of a pretend document. but if you want anything else you have to go into the paragraph menu then to line spacing and then enter the number. Word has a few pre selected choices on the ribbon, 1, 1.5, 2. Word has this for SOME features on the ribbon, but most of the formatting options are 2-3 menus deep and you have to adjust them, press ok, to have them applied to your document and see how it looks. pages makes live changes to any formatting and you can see the end result in your document live.
